As a student, Iâd given drumming lessons. Almost all my university classmates taught; it was part of the system somehow. Now, in autumn 1979, I had the idea of applying to a municipal music school for a part-time job as a music teacher, as my advanced performerâs degree qualified me to teach. The symphony orchestra percussionists taught at the Clara Schumann Music School in Düsseldorf, so I tried other nearby schools. I got plenty of positive responses to my applications and decided to teach two afternoons a week.
